Sipsmith is one of the founding distilleries of the modern London craft gin revival, established in 2009 as London’s first new copper pot distillery in nearly two centuries and credited with helping to trigger the global gin renaissance that has reshaped the premium spirits landscape over the past fifteen years. The distillery’s London Dry Gin is produced on small copper pot stills named Prudence, Patience and Constance in the company’s Chiswick distillery from a recipe of ten botanicals that emphasises the classical London Dry style: juniper-forward, dry, precise and herbaceous, in the tradition that defined the category before flavoured, contemporary-style gins began to crowd the premium market. The botanical basket includes Macedonian juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, liquorice root, orris root, almond, lemon peel, orange peel, cassia bark and ground cinnamon, providing the layered aromatic complexity that the London Dry category at its finest consistently achieves. Sipsmith has since been acquired by Beam Suntory but continues to distil in small batches from its Chiswick home with the same commitment to handcrafted quality that defined its founding philosophy. London Dry Gin is a legally defined category requiring the spirit to be distilled to at least 70% ABV, produced exclusively through the redistillation of neutral grain spirit in the presence of natural botanicals, with no artificial flavours or colours added after distillation, and with no sweetening added beyond a very small permitted maximum residual sugar level. Sipsmith’s London Dry is bottled at 41.6% ABV, a strength that preserves the botanical aromatics in their most complete form while providing the body and spirit integration that the best London Dry gins achieve on the palate. The brand’s commitment to the traditional style and its founding role in the contemporary craft gin movement give it a cultural significance in the gin category that extends well beyond its commercial market share. Sipsmith London Dry Gin is one of the most recognisable and consistently praised premium gin expressions from the UK, appearing on the back bars of the world’s finest cocktail establishments and attracting a loyal following among gin enthusiasts who prioritise traditional botanical balance and juniper-forward character over the sweeter, more accessible contemporary gin styles. Its dual appeal as a premium Gin and Tonic expression and as a serious cocktail base makes it one of the most versatile and commercially relevant spirits in this batch. Clear with a classic juniper-forward nose of fresh pine, citrus zest, coriander seed, dried herbs, angelica and a warm, resinous depth from the cassia and cinnamon. Medium-bodied with excellent botanical balance, a dry and precise palate of juniper, lemon and herbal spice, and a clean, peppery, refreshing finish. Exemplary with Fever-Tree tonic and a lemon twist. |
