The Domaine A&E Verset village-level Cornas is the estate’s introductory wine, a 100% Syrah assembled from the domaine’s younger-vine parcels and selected granite terroir within the Cornas appellation. While the Signature Verset cuvée represents the pinnacle of the estate’s ambition, this wine provides the essential context and introduction to the Verset family’s approach to Cornas: the same commitment to old-vine granite terroir and minimal-intervention winemaking philosophy applied to material that is slightly more accessible in its youth and earlier in its drinking window than the prestige cuvée. For collectors new to the estate, this is the natural starting point. The appellation-level Cornas from a producer of this pedigree and philosophy still draws on granite-terraced Syrah vineyards whose decomposed blue gneiss and schist soils produce wines of genuine mineral character and structural depth. The 2023 northern Rhône vintage was excellent, with a warm, dry summer producing ripe Syrah across the appellation while the granitic soils of Cornas’s best sites maintained the freshness and mineral precision that distinguish the finest Cornas from the rounder, more accessible wines of the surrounding appellations. The village wine from A&E Verset in this vintage is a wine with a defined drinking window, approachable earlier than the Signature Verset but still showing the structured, savoury character that defines Cornas at any quality level. The A&E Verset domaine occupies a position in Cornas that is both historically significant, through the family connection to Alain Verset’s celebrated legacy, and practically important as one of the estates most closely watched by those who follow the appellation’s evolution beyond the well-established names of Clape, Allemand and Coulet. The village-level wine, typically priced well below the prestige cuvée, provides an accessible entry point to the domaine’s style for collectors who wish to follow the estate across multiple cuvées and vintages. Deep ruby with a vibrant and expressive nose of black cherry, blueberry, cracked black pepper, smoked meat, iron and granite mineral. Medium to full-bodied on the palate with firm but supple tannins, excellent natural acidity and a long, savoury, mineral finish with a persistent peppery note on the close. Drink from 2027 through 2040. The 2023 Cornas ushers forth early whisperings of crushed graphite, early-ripe black cherry and light yet confident stems. Wrapped around a ripe tannic core, the 2023 is a medium-bodied, well-composed Cornas, delivering plenty of structure and character at this youthful point in time. Give this at least three more years to allow it to come together. - Vinous |
