Luce della Vite was established in 1995 as a pioneering joint venture between the Marchesi Frescobaldi family and Robert Mondavi Winery. The vision was to unite Tuscany's indigenous Sangiovese with Merlot, creating a wine that combined the elegance and structure of Montalcino with the richness and generosity of Bordeaux varieties. Since 2004, the estate has been wholly owned by the Frescobaldi family, who have continued to refine the style while preserving the wine's original philosophy. Situated southwest of Montalcino, the estate encompasses around 192 hectares, with approximately 88 hectares under vine on diverse galestro, clay and sandstone soils that contribute complexity and balance. The 2016 vintage is regarded as one of Tuscany's modern classics. A balanced growing season with warm days, cool nights and ideal harvest conditions produced fruit of exceptional ripeness while preserving freshness and aromatic precision. Each variety was fermented separately in stainless steel before malolactic fermentation in French oak. The final blend matured for 24 months in French oak barriques, around 80% new, followed by further bottle ageing before release. The result is considered one of the finest Luce vintages produced. Deep ruby in colour, the 2016 Luce opens with expressive aromas of black cherry, blackberry, ripe plum and cassis layered with violet, cedar, sweet tobacco, dark chocolate, espresso and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated yet beautifully poised, combining the richness of Merlot with the vibrant acidity and savoury structure of Sangiovese. Silky tannins, finely integrated oak and remarkable freshness lead to a long, mineral-driven finish with notes of liquorice, graphite and spice. Despite its power, the wine remains elegant and impeccably balanced. " Awarded 99 points, praising the wine's aromas of blackberries, blueberries, violets and sandalwood. He described it as full-bodied with "ultra-fine tannins" and exceptional length, calling it one of the greatest Luce releases. " -- James Suckling " Monica Larner highlighted the wine's seamless integration of ripe fruit, spice and oak, noting its outstanding concentration, precision and ageing potential. " -- Wine Advocate " Commended the wine's purity of black cherry, blackberry, iron, tobacco and spice flavours, supported by vibrant acidity and refined tannins. " -- Wine Spectator " Praised its elegance, freshness and harmonious balance, describing it as a benchmark vintage for Luce. " -- Decanter 96 Pts |
