Tasting Notes

Moët & Chandon’s Grand Vintage collection is produced only in years the house considers distinctive enough to merit a vintage expression. Rather than seeking consistency, each release reflects the character of a single harvest, showcasing a more individual and nuanced interpretation of Champagne than the house’s non-vintage wines.

The 2016 vintage followed a season of significant contrasts, with a wet spring giving way to a warm, dry summer that required careful vineyard management. Sourced from selected vineyards across Champagne, the wine is a blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Extended lees ageing enhances texture and complexity while preserving the freshness that defines the vintage.

The bouquet reveals aromas of baked apple, ripe pear and citrus zest, layered with toasted brioche, roasted hazelnut and delicate floral notes. The palate is refined and energetic, offering a fine mousse, vibrant acidity and a chalky mineral backbone. Subtle spice and pastry nuances accompany a long, precise finish with impressive balance and persistence.

Grand Vintage wines occupy an important place within Moët & Chandon’s portfolio, offering collectors and enthusiasts an opportunity to explore the house’s interpretation of a specific growing season. Produced only when conditions justify a vintage release, they are valued for their individuality, ageing potential and expression of Champagne’s diverse terroirs.

" Grand Vintage 2016 sums up the year's strong suits very neatly – beautiful ripeness without heaviness, compact build and fine ageworthiness. It's a characteristically clean-cut, snappy vintage from Moët, with aromas of fresh baguette, satsuma, sweet red apple and strawberry, all framed with the toasty sourdough aromas typical of the house. There's some concentration and vinosity lurking here, even with the house's delicate style and pinpoint, meringue-soft mousse. This seems destined to be one of the top Moët vintages of late.
