Tasting Notes

The Frescobaldi family has been at the heart of Tuscan winemaking for more than 700 years, with records of their involvement in viticulture dating back to 1308. Over the centuries, the family has cultivated some of Tuscany's most celebrated estates, including CastelGiocondo in Montalcino, Castello Nipozzano in Chianti Rufina and Ammiraglia in Maremma. Their acquisition of Tenuta Calimaia marked their entry into the historic appellation of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, one of Italy's oldest fine wine regions. Located in the Cervognano district between the Val di Chiana and Val d'Orcia, the estate encompasses approximately 70 hectares, with vineyards planted around 300 metres above sea level on clay-rich Pliocene soils that are particularly well suited to Prugnolo Gentile, the local clone of Sangiovese. Frescobaldi's philosophy combines centuries of tradition with modern precision, producing wines that faithfully express their origin while maintaining elegance and longevity.

The 2019 Tenuta Calimaia Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG is produced from 90% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and 10% complementary native red grape varieties. The grapes are harvested by hand before undergoing spontaneous fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is matured for 24 months in 50-hectolitre oak casks, then further refined in bottle before release. The 2019 growing season featured a warm winter, a cool and rainy spring, followed by a warm but balanced summer that allowed the grapes to achieve excellent physiological ripeness while retaining freshness. The resulting wine is medium to full-bodied, combining vibrant acidity with refined, silky tannins. Aromas of cherry, sour cherry and black cherry are layered with sage, lavender and subtle cocoa bean spice, while the palate is energetic, savoury and persistent, reflecting the elegance and age-worthy structure that define classic Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

Although the 2019 vintage has not been reviewed as extensively as many of Frescobaldi's Brunello or Chianti wines, it has received favourable critical attention.

" Described as polished and harmonious, with aromas of cherries, dried flowers and warm baking spices. The palate is fresh and refined, supported by fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and a long, savoury finish that reflects both balance and elegance. " -- James Suckling

" Highlighted for expressive aromas of ripe cherry, wild herbs and cocoa, complemented by polished tannins, bright acidity and a structured finish, suggesting excellent development over the medium term. " -- Wine Enthusiast
