Tasting Notes

Bodega Numanthia is one of Toro’s most respected estates, renowned for producing powerful yet refined wines from exceptionally old Tempranillo vines, locally known as Tinta de Toro. The flagship Numanthia exemplifies the estate’s commitment to expressing the region’s distinctive character while balancing concentration with elegance.

The 2019 vintage was shaped by favourable growing conditions, allowing for slow, even ripening and excellent fruit quality. Sourced from low-yielding, ungrafted bush vines planted on sandy and stony soils across Toro, the wine benefits from significant diurnal temperature variation, preserving freshness alongside the naturally rich fruit. Maturation in French oak adds complexity without overshadowing the vineyard expression.

The bouquet reveals aromas of blackberry, black cherry and plum, layered with violet, liquorice, graphite and sweet spice. The palate is full-bodied and structured, with dense yet finely grained tannins supported by vibrant acidity. Concentrated dark fruit is complemented by notes of cocoa, cedar and savoury herbs, leading to a long, powerful finish with impressive balance and persistence.

Numanthia has helped redefine the reputation of Toro, demonstrating the region’s capacity to produce age-worthy wines of remarkable depth and finesse. Its combination of old-vine fruit, meticulous viticulture and restrained winemaking has earned enduring respect among collectors, sommeliers and enthusiasts seeking one of Spain’s benchmark expressions of Tinta de Toro.

" The eponymous 2019 Numanthia is a selection from over 100 small plots averaging 75 years of age. It reflects a warm and ripe year with its 15.5% alcohol and is a powerful and generous red with a full-bodied palate and plenty of ripe black fruit and spices from the élevage. It matured in 60% new barrels and 40% second- and third-use barrels, 20% of them 400-liter ones, for a period of 18 months. The oak feels better integrated in the wine, the tannins are fine-grained, and there is nice balance. " -- Wine Advocate
