Tasting Note :

Dog Point’s estate Sauvignon Blanc represents the clearest expression of what Ivan Sutherland and James Healy set out to achieve when they left Cloudy Bay in 2002 to produce wines of their own: a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc of exceptional precision, freshness and aromatic purity, made from old vine, hand-harvested fruit on certified organic land and produced without additions of any kind. The estate’s Sauvignon Blanc vines include plantings from the 1970s, among the oldest in Marlborough, and the low-yielding character of these ancient blocks gives the wine a concentration and persistence that distinguishes it from the broadly commercial style of many regional contemporaries.

The 2025 vintage in Marlborough was vinified by Ivan Sutherland from 100% indigenously fermented fruit, harvested by hand in a continuation of the estate’s long-standing commitment to methods that account for the fact that only 5% of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is hand-picked. The wine’s aromatic freshness is captured immediately upon harvest and preserved through careful cellar work, with no additions of yeasts, enzymes, acids or sugars applied. James Suckling’s team reviewed the 2025 Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc, describing aromas of grapefruit, brine, green olives and limes with a medium to full-bodied, linear and vibrant palate and a touch of salinity on the finish.

Dog Point’s standard Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most consistent and reliable expressions of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc produced at any quality level, consistently earning critical recognition alongside the estate’s premium barrel-fermented Section 94 as a benchmark for the appellation’s aromatic potential. The 2023 vintage earned 94 points from Wine Spectator, 93 from Vinous and 92 from James Suckling, a strong scorecard that reflects the consistency of quality Dog Point delivers across the range. The 2025 is the most recently released vintage and continues the estate’s long record of precision and aromatic integrity.

Pale straw with a vivid nose of grapefruit, lime, green olive and a saline minerality, with a focused freshness that speaks directly to the old vine character of the estate’s Wairau Valley plantings. The palate is medium-full with restrained exuberance, linear vitality and a clean, persistent saline finish. Drink now through 2028.
