Famille Perrin is the family behind Chateau de Beaucastel, one of the Southern Rhone's most distinguished estates in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Their extensive Vinsobres holdings in the northern Rhone Villages reflect the same commitment to terroir, low intervention and old-vine quality that defines their flagship work. Les Hauts de Julien is the prestige selection from the Perrin Vinsobres portfolio and one of the most respected wines in the appellation. Vinsobres sits at approximately 300 metres above sea level, twenty kilometres north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, a position that delivers considerably cooler conditions and a longer growing season than the valley floor. Les Hauts de Julien is sourced from an ancient co-planted parcel of Grenache and Syrah approaching ninety years of age, growing on stony quaternary alluvial terraces. The 2022 vintage was exceptionally dry from winter onwards; rainfall in August rescued the vines from heat stress and allowed slow, steady ripening to conclusion. Fifteen percent of the wine sees oak for one year, and it is bottled without filtration. Vinsobres received its own village appellation status in 2006 and continues to build credibility as one of the Southern Rhone's most compelling crus. The Perrin family's presence in the appellation lends both viticultural rigour and commercial recognition. Les Hauts de Julien is widely regarded as the benchmark Vinsobres expression, and old-vine co-planted Grenache and Syrah at this altitude makes a compelling argument for the appellation's full potential. An ideal pairing for slow-roasted lamb, wild boar or lamb chops with tapenade. The wine has the tannin structure and density to develop over five to eight years in the cellar, and benefits from a generous decant if opened early. Deep ruby with purple hues. The nose is dense and layered, offering cassis, fig, smoked meat, dark olive, lavender and graphite with the characteristic herbal lift of cool-climate Grenache and Syrah. The palate is full-bodied, supple and persistent, with confident tannin structure and a long mineral-inflected finish. |
