The Paring’s Red Wine is the Bordeaux-inspired proprietary blend that mirrors, within the second-label framework, Jonata’s flagship Desafio and Fenix expressions. Sourced from the Ballard Canyon estate and assembled by Matt Dees from lots that do not meet the specification for Jonata’s named wines, the Paring Red represents the intellectual continuity of Jonata’s Bordeaux ambitions at a more accessible price point. It is a wine conceived for near-term drinking rather than long cellaring, and delivers the sandy-soil freshness and cassis-forward character of Ballard Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon with immediate appeal. The 2015 California vintage ranks among the finest of the decade for Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines in Napa Valley and the broader Central Coast, delivering a small but highly concentrated harvest with exceptional freshness for the ripeness levels achieved. The Ballard Canyon estate, with its Careaga sand soils and coastal influence, produced well-defined, structured fruit in 2015 that is reflected in this blend’s balance and longevity. Jonata’s winemaking team notes 2015 alongside 2007, 2009 and 2018 as one of the estate’s most significant growing seasons. The Paring Red Wine is widely distributed through restaurant and retail channels, functioning as an ideal introduction to the Jonata and Hilt family of wines for consumers who have not yet accessed the flagship bottlings via mailing list allocation. Its relatively modest price point, combined with the pedigree of Ballard Canyon fruit and Matt Dees’s winemaking, makes it one of the most credible value propositions from the Santa Ynez Valley appellation. The wine is typically available in larger quantities than Jonata’s single-vineyard or varietal-specific expressions. |
