Domaine de Chevalier is one of Pessac-Léognan’s most consistently admired classified Graves estates, producing both red and white wines from its 45 hectares of vineyards in a style that combines the Bordeaux region’s structural tradition with the particular mineral character and elegance of the Graves terroir. The red wine, produced from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Petit Verdot, is aged in French barriques with a proportion of new oak that the estate calibrates carefully to allow the wine’s natural mineral freshness and aromatic complexity to develop without excess extraction or oak influence. Domaine de Chevalier’s wines are among the most consistently age-worthy produced in Pessac-Léognan, and the estate’s track record of producing wines that improve over decades in the cellar makes older vintages from this address particularly compelling acquisitions. The 2010 Bordeaux vintage is widely regarded as one of the two or three greatest vintages since the legendary 1982, producing wines of extraordinary structural depth, mineral precision and ageing potential across all the major appellations of the left bank. At fifteen years from harvest, the 2010 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge is still developing rather than at its peak, and the wine-searcher aggregate of 94/100 across all approved publications confirms its consistent and high critical reception. For Pessac-Léognan, where the combination of the Graves’ sandy gravel soils and the 2010 vintage’s exceptional structure produced wines of remarkable freshness alongside their deep concentration, the 2010 red wines are consistently described by critics and collectors who have followed their development as needing another five to ten years of cellaring before approaching their optimal peak. Domaine de Chevalier 2010 at fifteen years from harvest represents one of the most compelling mature Bordeaux acquisitions from this catalogue: a wine of documented and consistent quality from one of Pessac-Léognan’s finest estates, from a great vintage, in a format that still has significant development ahead. For collectors who have the patience for five or more additional years of cellaring, this is a wine of outstanding quality and long-term promise. Deep ruby with a developing nose of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, dried herbs, iron mineral, subtle truffle and the distinctive smoky Graves character. Full-bodied with firm, still-developing tannins, excellent natural acidity and a very long, mineral, classical Graves finish of considerable depth and persistence. Best from 2026 through 2042. This is the most structured and powerful DC in a long, long time. Full bodied, with polished and rich tannins and a long finish. Tasted twice. The rising star of Bordeaux? - James Suckling The 2010 Domaine de Chevalier shows a little more amplitude compared to the Malartic-Lagravière, red and black fruit, undergrowth, pressed rose petals and a touch of crushed stone all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins but demonstrating great depth. This feels saline, slightly marine-influenced in the mouth, with outstanding precision on the slightly peppery finish. Oliver Bernard oversaw a magnificent Grand Vin. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the BI Wines & Spirits 10-Year On tasting. - Vinous |
