René Geoffroy is a family grower-producer based in Cumières in the Vallée de la Marne, farming approximately 15 hectares across several villages with a biodynamic approach that has informed every aspect of the domaine’s viticulture and vinification since the transition from conventional farming in the early 2000s. The domaine is particularly noted for the originality of its range and the quality of its single-parcel, vintage-dated cuvées, which explore the individual character of specific plots within its holdings with a clarity and conviction rare in the appellation. Les Houtrants Complanté represents one of the estate’s most distinctive and historically resonant expressions. Complanté vines are planted field-blend style, with multiple varieties growing intermingled in the same vineyard and harvested simultaneously. This pre-modern viticulture technique, which was the historical norm in Champagne before the phylloxera crisis and varietal replanting of the late nineteenth century, produces base wines of unusual complexity and textural interest from the intermingled ripening characteristics of different varieties in the same plot. Les Houtrants is the specific parcel within the Cumières appellation where Geoffroy’s complanté vines grow, and the Brut Nature classification confirms a wine without added dosage: only the natural residual sugar from fermentation provides any sweetness. The 2012 Champagne vintage was one of the finest of the decade, producing wines of exceptional freshness, precision and ageing potential. Les Houtrants Complanté is a wine that occupies the most artisan and philosophically distinctive end of the grower Champagne spectrum: a field-blend, zero-dosage, single-parcel expression from a biodynamically farmed estate, produced in a great vintage and now benefiting from more than a decade of bottle ageing since disgorgement. For collectors who seek the most individualistic and historically informed expressions of Champagne’s pre-industrial winemaking traditions, this is precisely the kind of wine that the grower movement has made available. René Geoffroy’s work has been consistently praised by Champagne specialists, though the estate’s very small production and limited international distribution have kept it below the radar of the major publications. |
