Tasting Notes

The Hilt Estate is one of the leading producers in California's Sta. Rita Hills AVA, owned by the same family behind the renowned Screaming Eagle winery. Established in 2008, the estate farms three exceptional, wind-swept vineyards—Radian, Bentrock and Puerta del Mar—located in the cool, maritime-influenced western reaches of the appellation. Under the direction of acclaimed winemaker Matt Dees, The Hilt has built an international reputation for producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that combine power with restraint, emphasising site expression, natural acidity and mineral precision. The 2017 Estate Pinot Noir is a blend of the estate's finest vineyard blocks, showcasing the hallmark freshness and complexity of this celebrated cool-climate region.

Produced from 100% Pinot Noir, the 2017 Estate Pinot Noir is sourced primarily from Radian, Bentrock and Sanford & Benedict vineyards. The wine is fermented with a small proportion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic complexity and structure before maturing for 12 months in French oak barrels, approximately 30% new oak. Medium- to full-bodied, it balances ripe fruit with savoury nuances, vibrant acidity and finely textured tannins, reflecting the cool Pacific influence that defines the Sta. Rita Hills.

Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of rose petals, black cherry, dried tobacco, blood orange, sage and pomegranate, accented by cracked white pepper and subtle earthy spice. The palate is layered and refined, combining bright red and dark berry fruit with savoury herbs, salinity and mineral tension. Silky tannins and fresh acidity provide impressive structure without sacrificing elegance, while hints of forest floor and dust add complexity. The finish is long, poised and persistent, leaving an impression of precision, freshness and remarkable balance.

" Described the wine as beautifully balanced, with black raspberry, cassis, scorched earth and violet aromas, praising its depth, texture and ageing potential. " -- Jeb Dunnuck
