Tasting Note :

Giacomo Conterno is universally acknowledged as one of Barolo's greatest estates, and Roberto Conterno's decision to produce a single-vineyard Barbera from the Cerretta site in Serralunga d'Alba demonstrated his conviction that the variety deserves the same terroir-specific approach he applies to his Nebbiolo. The Cerretta vineyard, from whose 20-year-old vines this Barbera is sourced, also contributes fruit to Conterno's celebrated Barolo Cerretta, providing an instructive comparison between the two varieties grown in identical conditions.

The Wine Advocate awarded 94 points, with Monica Larner noting: 'The Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cerretta shows the richness and concentration achieved in this growing season. The Cerretta site's clay soils produce extra power in this wine, with wild cherry, plum, spice, tarry smoke, dried mint and sweet apricot. The 2019 will be remembered for its lasting textural impact.' Vinous awarded 93 points, describing 'bright and fresh with plenty of red-toned fruit lifted by blood orange, mint and spice accents, medium in body and super-refined, sizzling with tension and energy.'

Roberto Conterno's conviction that Barbera can express genuine terroir character when farmed with the same rigour as Nebbiolo, from a site of proven quality in Serralunga d'Alba, has produced a wine that stands well above the category norm. The 2019 vintage in Piedmont was warm and concentrated, providing the textural depth and aromatic richness that makes this Barbera capable of mid-term cellaring in addition to immediate enjoyment. For buyers who appreciate the variety's natural acidity and dark fruit character, this is the benchmark expression.

Drink from 2023 to 2030. An excellent companion for pasta with rich meat sauce, grilled Piedmontese beef or aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16 degrees Celsius. Can be cellared for five to eight years for further development.

Deep ruby with brilliant highlights. Wild cherry, plum, tarry smoke, dried mint and spice on the nose, with the Cerretta clay's additional power evident. The palate is medium to full-bodied, refined and sizzling with tension; blood orange, red fruit, spice and a saline mineral note all race across the palate. Superb varietal expression from a legendary estate.
