Les Forts de Latour is the second wine of Chateau Latour, one of Bordeaux's five First Growths and arguably the most consistently age-worthy wine in the Medoc. Officially recognised as a standalone chateau wine since 1966, Les Forts draws from parcels outside the core grand enclos of Latour itself, typically younger vines or fruit that does not meet the strict standards required for the grand vin. In exceptional vintages, a proportion of wine originally destined for Latour may be directed to Les Forts, as occurred in 2020 when a 64-hectolitre tank of Merlot was incorporated into the blend. The 2020 Les Forts de Latour is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26.5% Merlot and 3.5% Petit Verdot, the addition of the Merlot tank from the grand vin having contributed exceptional depth. William Kelley at the Wine Advocate awarded 94 points, describing a wine 'unwinding in the glass with aromas of minty cassis, plums, licorice, pipe tobacco and vanilla pod, medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with terrific depth.' James Suckling awarded 96, Neal Martin at Vinous 95, and Decanter 95. The 2020 Bordeaux vintage is considered one of the finest of the past thirty years. Les Forts de Latour consistently holds a unique position in the Bordeaux hierarchy: produced by one of the region's most respected estates, it shares the same cellar team, winemaking philosophy and often partially the same vineyard source as the grand vin, yet trades at roughly a fifth of the price. The 2020's quality, given the incorporation of Latour Merlot and the exceptional vintage conditions, makes this release particularly compelling for buyers seeking First Growth character at a fraction of the headline price. Best from 2028 to 2055. Decant two to three hours and pair with roasted prime rib, venison, truffle preparations or aged hard cheese. A minimum of six to eight more years of cellaring is strongly recommended before opening. Deep ruby with plum tints. A focused, textbook Latour bouquet of minty cassis, plums, licorice, graphite, pipe tobacco and vanilla pod unfolds gradually. The palate is medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety with excellent depth at the core, firm but perfectly ripe tannins and a long, structured finish. Clearly a wine built for decades of development. |
