Domaine Henri Magnien et Fils is a Gevrey-Chambertin estate of rising critical standing, elevated significantly by the work of Charles Magnien, Henri’s grandson, since he took responsibility for winemaking in 2009. The estate’s most celebrated holding is a substantial 1.48-hectare parcel in Les Cazetiers Premier Cru, historically considered among the finest sites in Gevrey-Chambertin for the mineral complexity and structural depth it consistently provides from its clay-limestone soils on the northern slope above the village. Charles Magnien has pursued organic viticulture, reduced new oak and lower yields to allow the site’s terroir to express itself with progressively greater clarity and precision, and the estate is now firmly established as one of the producers to follow in Gevrey-Chambertin for collectors of serious red Burgundy. The 2022 Burgundy vintage was warm and generous, producing wines of excellent aromatic intensity and supple tannin structure across the Côte de Nuits. In Les Cazetiers, where the clay-limestone soils and easterly exposure moderate even warm seasons, the 2022 Magnien shows the ripe, sensual character of the vintage while retaining the saline mineral thread and grip that defines this site across all conditions. Vinous described the 2022 Cazetiers as “the ripest and most sensual of Magnien’s cuvées on the nose, adorned with lush red cherry, raspberry and light fig scents” with “more horsepower” than the Ruchottes-Chambertin and a finish that “lingers wonderfully.” Wine Advocate described a wine of “excellent depth of fruit, supple tannins and a saline finish.” Vinous awarded the 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 93 to 95 points and Wine Advocate 92 to 94 points, both assessed from barrel ahead of bottling, placing this wine firmly among the finest Premier Cru red Burgundies produced in the 2022 vintage. For collectors who have followed Magnien’s progress over the past decade, the 2022 Cazetiers represents both a continuation of the estate’s improving trajectory and a wine that is more immediately approachable than the austere 2021 while sharing its fundamental Premier Cru ambition and mineral identity. |
