Tasting Note :

Campo ai Sassi is the Rosso di Montalcino from Castelgiocondo, Frescobaldi's historic estate on the southwestern slope of Montalcino. The wine is produced from younger vines and selected parcels that do not meet the standards required for the estate's Brunello di Montalcino, offering an accessible and earlier-drinking entry point into the Castelgiocondo range at a Rosso classification level. Rosso di Montalcino is released after just one year of ageing, compared to five years for Brunello, making it significantly more approachable in youth.

The 2024 vintage in Montalcino is among the most recent in this batch, representing a release so new that comprehensive critical assessment from approved publications is unlikely to have appeared in widely accessible retail channels. The 2024 growing season at Montalcino followed the pattern of recent warm vintages, with results across Tuscany broadly positive for Sangiovese concentration and natural balance. Campo ai Sassi in the 2024 should offer the accessible, fruit-forward character that makes Rosso di Montalcino such a useful early-release wine.

Campo ai Sassi serves the commercial function of providing an immediately enjoyable wine from one of Montalcino's most recognisable names, allowing buyers to experience the Castelgiocondo style without the premium pricing and extended cellaring requirements of the estate's Brunello. The field of stones suggested by the name references the vineyard's rocky, well-drained terrain, which contributes the mineral character that distinguishes good Rosso di Montalcino from simple easy-drinking Sangiovese.

Drink now through 2029. Pair with Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragu, pappardelle with meat sauce or aged Pecorino. Serve at 16 degrees Celsius with a brief decant.

Clear ruby red with violet hints. The nose shows fresh cherry, wild berry, dried herbs and a fine mineral Montalcino note. The palate is medium-bodied with Sangiovese's characteristic freshness and acidity, moderate tannins and a clean, focused finish. Well-made and honest Rosso di Montalcino for current enjoyment.
