The 2011 Domaine Pignier Côtes du Jura En Chon Poulsard is a rare and mature expression of one of the Jura's most distinctive grape varieties. Produced by Domaine Pignier, a historic estate whose origins date back to the 13th century, the wine reflects the domaine's long-standing commitment to biodynamic farming and traditional Jura winemaking. The estate is widely regarded as one of the region's leading producers, known for preserving local grape varieties and crafting wines that faithfully express their terroir. En Chon is a single-vineyard site planted to Poulsard (also known as Ploussard), a delicate, thin-skinned red grape that is indigenous to the Jura. Unlike Pinot Noir or Syrah, Poulsard is prized not for concentration or colour but for its perfume, freshness and transparency. The vineyard's limestone-rich soils contribute structure and mineral character, while the cool Jura climate helps preserve the grape's naturally vibrant acidity. After more than a decade of bottle age, the 2011 vintage displays a beautifully evolved aromatic profile. Notes of wild strawberry, dried cherry and redcurrant are layered with rose petal, orange peel, dried herbs and subtle earthy nuances. On the palate, it is light-bodied yet remarkably complex, with silky tannins, bright acidity and a delicate mineral backbone. Time in bottle has softened the wine's youthful fruit while revealing savoury, tertiary characteristics that add depth and intrigue. The finish is elegant, persistent and distinctly Jura in character. Mature Poulsard remains one of the wine world's hidden treasures. While the variety is often consumed young, carefully made examples from top producers such as Domaine Pignier can develop surprising complexity with age. En Chon showcases a side of Jura that differs markedly from the region's better-known oxidative whites, offering a wine of finesse, individuality and remarkable drinkability. |
