Tasting Notes :

The 2014 Domaine Pignier Côtes du Jura Vin Jaune is a traditional Vin Jaune produced by Domaine Pignier, one of the Jura's oldest wine estates, with a history dating back to the 13th century. Based in Montaigu, the domaine is a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the region and is widely regarded as one of the benchmark producers of authentic Jura wines. Vin Jaune is the Jura's most iconic wine style, produced exclusively from Savagnin and aged for more than six years under a veil of yeast known as voile, a process that gives the wine its unmistakable character.

The wine is aged in old oak barrels that are not topped up during maturation, allowing a protective layer of yeast to develop naturally on the wine's surface. This lengthy ageing process concentrates the wine and creates the distinctive aromas associated with Vin Jaune, while preserving remarkable freshness and longevity. By law, Vin Jaune is bottled in the traditional 62cl clavelin, reflecting the volume that typically remains after years of evaporation and maturation.

After nearly a decade of development, the 2014 vintage displays aromas of walnut, toasted almond, preserved lemon and dried citrus, layered with notes of curry spice, honey, bread crust and subtle oxidative complexity. On the palate, it is powerful yet precise, with intense concentration balanced by vibrant acidity. The hallmark flavours of walnut, spice and saline minerality unfold gradually, leading to an exceptionally long and savoury finish. Vin Jaune is renowned for its ability to evolve over many decades, and this bottle remains at a relatively youthful stage of its development.

Among the world's most distinctive wine styles, Vin Jaune occupies a unique position. Often compared stylistically to dry Sherry due to its biological ageing, it remains entirely its own tradition, shaped by the Savagnin grape, Jura's cool climate and centuries of local winemaking heritage. Domaine Pignier's biodynamic approach adds an additional layer of purity and terroir expression to this historic wine.
