The 2017 Livio Felluga Merlot is a premium Merlot from Friuli Colli Orientali, one of Italy's most respected wine-growing regions. Produced by Livio Felluga, a historic estate often credited with helping to elevate the reputation of Friuli on the international stage, this wine demonstrates the estate's commitment to producing elegant, terroir-driven wines with both regional identity and ageing potential. The vineyards are located in the rolling hills of eastern Friuli, near the border with Slovenia. The region's unique combination of marl and sandstone soils, known locally as ponca, contributes structure, freshness and complexity to the wines. The 2017 growing season was warm and dry, resulting in lower yields but producing fruit with excellent concentration and ripeness. The wine opens with aromas of black cherry, plum and blackberry, complemented by notes of cedar, tobacco, cocoa and sweet spice. With additional bottle age, more savoury nuances of leather, dried herbs and forest floor begin to emerge. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with ripe dark fruit supported by polished tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is long and refined, with layers of spice and mineral complexity. Within the market, the 2017 Livio Felluga Merlot represents a distinctly Friulian interpretation of Merlot. Compared with richer examples from warmer regions, it places greater emphasis on freshness, structure and elegance. For collectors and enthusiasts, it offers an opportunity to explore one of Italy's benchmark producers beyond the estate's celebrated white wines. Pairs particularly well with:
