The 2019 Frescobaldi Pomino Metodo Classico Brut Leonia is a traditional-method sparkling wine from the historic Pomino estate in Tuscany. Produced by the renowned Marchesi Frescobaldi family, Leonia pays tribute to Leonia degli Albizi, wife of Angiolo Frescobaldi, who played a significant role in the development of the Pomino estate during the 19th century. Today, the wine stands as one of Italy's most distinctive sparkling expressions, showcasing the unique potential of Pomino's high-altitude vineyards. Located in the hills northeast of Florence, the Pomino vineyards are among the highest in Tuscany, reaching elevations of up to 700 metres above sea level. The combination of altitude, cool temperatures and significant day-night variation allows Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to retain freshness and aromatic complexity, creating ideal conditions for premium sparkling wine production. The 2019 vintage delivered fruit with excellent ripeness and balance, providing both concentration and elegance. Produced using the Metodo Classico method with extended lees ageing, the wine opens with aromas of lemon zest, green apple and white peach, complemented by notes of white flowers, toasted brioche and roasted almonds. On the palate, it is vibrant and refined, with fine, persistent bubbles supporting a core of citrus and orchard fruit. Fresh acidity and a subtle mineral character contribute to a long, balanced finish. While Tuscany is better known for its red wines, Pomino has a long history of producing high-quality sparkling wines. Leonia demonstrates how the region's cooler, elevated sites can produce wines of finesse and precision, offering a distinctive Italian alternative to more traditional sparkling wine regions. |
