The warm and generous 2020 vintage provided excellent ripeness while retaining sufficient acidity to maintain balance and structure.

The wine opens with aromas of ripe citrus, yellow apple and white peach, accompanied by notes of white flowers, toasted almonds and subtle hints of brioche. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and textured, offering a concentrated core of orchard fruit supported by vibrant acidity and a distinct mineral backbone. The finish is long, fresh and finely balanced.

Bottled just prior to my visit, the 2020 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Les Cras has a taut and crisp, petrichor-tinged bouquet, backward compared to Merlin's other cuvées but nicely focused. The palate is well balanced with a slight menthol tincture, fine acidity with plenty of substance towards the slightly honeyed finish that manages to maintain tension. Excellent. - Vinous
