The 2021 Markus Molitor Riesling Ockfener Bockstein Auslese ** (White Capsule) is a Mosel Riesling from one of Germany's most celebrated producers. Markus Molitor has built an international reputation for his meticulous vineyard management and dedication to expressing individual vineyard sites, producing a diverse portfolio of Rieslings that rank among the finest in the region. The estate's capsule system serves as a guide to style, with the White Capsule indicating a dry interpretation that emphasizes purity, minerality and site expression. The wine originates from Ockfener Bockstein, one of the Saar Valley's most distinguished vineyards. Characterised by steep slopes and Devonian slate soils, the site is renowned for producing Rieslings of remarkable elegance, freshness and longevity. The cooler climate of the Saar contributes vibrant acidity and aromatic precision, while the slate-rich terroir imparts the mineral character for which the vineyard is famous. The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as one of Germany's standout recent vintages for Riesling. Cooler growing conditions resulted in wines with exceptional acidity, aromatic clarity and strong ageing potential. The wine opens with aromas of lime, green apple and white peach, complemented by notes of citrus blossom, fresh herbs and wet slate. On the palate, it is concentrated yet remarkably precise, with vibrant acidity supporting layers of citrus and orchard fruit. The finish is long, mineral-driven and exceptionally focused. Ockfener Bockstein is considered one of the Saar's benchmark vineyards, often producing wines that combine the finesse of the Saar with the depth and complexity associated with the finest sites of the Mosel. The Auslese classification reflects the ripeness of the harvested fruit, while the dry White Capsule style delivers a particularly transparent expression of vineyard and vintage. "A smidge of white pepper creeps into the lemony nose of the 2021 Riesling Ockfener Bockstein Auslese** White Capsule. The lemony, zesty lift is almost ethereal. Absolute purity and tension characterize the palate. Limpidity and freshness disarm the slender, concentrated, smooth body with much flow, much energy. The lemon echoes long after the wine is gone. A love letter to the Saar. (Dry) - Vinous |
