The 2023 Domaine A&E Verset Cornas is a Syrah from one of the most historic families in the Northern Rhône. Produced by Domaine A&E Verset, the estate is led by Emmanuelle Verset, who continues a winemaking legacy closely connected to her great-uncle Noël Verset, one of the legendary figures responsible for preserving and defining the identity of Cornas during the 20th century. Today, the estate combines traditional Cornas winemaking with thoughtful vineyard practices aimed at preserving the region's steep granite slopes for future generations. The wine is sourced from multiple parcels across Cornas, including vineyards in Champelrose, Les Mazards, Les Côtes and Reynard, many of which contain old vines planted on the appellation's characteristic decomposed granite soils. Emmanuelle continues the traditional practice of 100% whole-cluster fermentation and ageing in used oak, allowing the vineyard character to remain at the forefront of the wine. The 2023 vintage offers aromas of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry, layered with notes of violet, cracked pepper, olive tapenade and smoked herbs. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with concentrated dark fruit supported by fresh acidity and finely structured tannins. The granite terroir contributes a distinctive mineral edge, while the whole-cluster fermentation adds savoury complexity and aromatic lift. The finish is long, energetic and distinctly Cornas in character. Few names carry as much historical significance in Cornas as Verset. While many modern Cornas producers have moved towards riper and more polished styles, A&E Verset remains rooted in the traditions that established the appellation's reputation. The estate's wines are increasingly sought after by Rhône enthusiasts for their authenticity, transparency and connection to some of Cornas' most historic vineyard holdings. "The 2023 Cornas ushers forth early whisperings of crushed graphite, early-ripe black cherry and light yet confident stems. Wrapped around a ripe tannic core, the 2023 is a medium-bodied, well-composed Cornas, delivering plenty of structure and character at this youthful point in time. Give this at least three more years to allow it to come together. - Vinous |
