The NV Adrien Renoir Le Cépage Grand Cru is a grower Champagne from one of the most exciting new-generation producers in the Montagne de Reims. Based in the Grand Cru village of Verzy, Adrien Renoir has quickly established a reputation for terroir-focused Champagnes that combine precision, energy and a minimalist winemaking approach. Working with organically farmed vineyards and low-intervention cellar practices, Renoir has become part of a growing movement of artisanal growers redefining contemporary Champagne. Le Cépage is sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in Verzy, a village renowned for producing Pinot Noir of remarkable finesse and aromatic complexity. The chalk-rich soils of the Montagne de Reims provide both structure and minerality, while the cool climate helps preserve freshness and tension. Fermentation and ageing are carried out with a focus on expressing vineyard character rather than winemaking influence, resulting in a Champagne that is transparent and site-driven. The wine opens with aromas of citrus peel, green apple and white peach, complemented by notes of white flowers, toasted bread and crushed chalk. On the palate, it is vibrant and finely detailed, with a persistent mousse supporting a core of orchard fruit and citrus. Bright acidity and pronounced mineral tension provide structure, while subtle lees-derived complexity adds depth to the long, saline finish. Adrien Renoir has rapidly become a name followed by collectors and Champagne enthusiasts seeking small-production grower Champagnes. Le Cépage reflects the estate's philosophy of highlighting the identity of Verzy's Grand Cru terroir through wines that prioritise purity, balance and freshness. The result is a Champagne that sits comfortably alongside the region's most compelling artisan bottlings "Aromas of pear, orange oil, freshly baked bread, toasted almonds and white flowers introduce the NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru Le Cépage (2020 base), disgorged in January 2023. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and suave, it's fleshy and enveloping, with a ripe core of fruit, bright acids and a saline finish. - Wine Advocate |
