Tenuta Perano is one of the flagship estates of the historic Marchesi Frescobaldi family, whose winemaking heritage in Tuscany spans more than 700 years. Situated in Gaiole in Chianti, between 400 and 600 metres above sea level, the estate occupies a natural amphitheatre of south-west-facing vineyards that benefit from abundant sunshine and significant diurnal temperature variation. These conditions allow Sangiovese to ripen slowly, producing wines of aromatic intensity, vibrant acidity and refined tannins. Since acquiring the estate, Frescobaldi has transformed Tenuta Perano into one of the leading names in modern Chianti Classico, combining traditional Tuscan character with precision and elegance. Predominantly Sangiovese with small proportions of traditional Chianti Classico varieties, the 2020 vintage underwent temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel with regular pumping over to achieve gentle extraction of colour and tannins. The wine was then matured partly in oak casks before further bottle ageing. Medium-bodied and classically styled, it combines vibrant red fruit, floral aromatics and savoury minerality with polished tannins and bright acidity, making it enjoyable on release while capable of medium-term ageing. Brilliant ruby red in colour. The bouquet opens with fragrant aromas of violet, raspberry and cherry, complemented by blackberry, clove, black pepper and subtle herbal notes. On the palate, fresh red berry fruit is supported by lively acidity and a pronounced mineral character. The tannins are firm yet silky, giving the wine structure without heaviness, while hints of anise, liquorice and sage add complexity. The finish is dry, harmonious and persistent, reflecting the freshness and balance that distinguish the 2020 vintage. " Aromas of mixed forest berries and lovely herbal notes, such as anise, liquorice and sage... medium-bodied with a nice balance of fruit, lightly firm yet silky tannins and bright, citrusy acidity." -- James Suckling " Praised its sophisticated structure, concentration, crisp acidity and ageing potential, noting flavours of cherry, blackcurrant, mineral and chocolate." -- Decanter |
