Domaine Jean-Michel Gaunoux is a traditional family estate based in Meursault, in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. The Gaunoux family has cultivated vineyards for generations, producing wines that emphasise authenticity, terroir and classical Burgundian winemaking. The domaine is best known for its Meursault Premier Cru wines, but it also crafts regional Bourgogne Côte d'Or bottlings from carefully selected vineyard parcels surrounding Meursault. Winemaking follows a restrained, low-intervention philosophy, allowing the character of the vintage and limestone-rich soils to take centre stage. The 2021 vintage was particularly challenging due to severe spring frosts, resulting in very low yields but wines of freshness, precision and classic Burgundian balance. Produced from 100% Chardonnay, this Bourgogne Côte d'Or Blanc is fermented and matured in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, before spending several months on its fine lees. The wine is medium-bodied, combining crisp citrus fruit with orchard fruit richness, subtle oak influence and the mineral tension characteristic of the Côte de Beaune. It is approachable in its youth while capable of developing additional complexity over the medium term. Pale straw yellow with bright golden reflections. The bouquet offers aromas of grapefruit, lemon zest and orange rind, complemented by white peach, ripe pear and delicate honeysuckle. Gentle notes of toasted hazelnut, fresh butter and subtle vanilla emerge with aeration. The palate is fresh and finely balanced, with lively acidity supporting flavours of citrus, orchard fruits and a chalky mineral core. A light creamy texture from lees ageing adds depth, while the finish is clean, vibrant and persistent with lingering citrus and saline notes. |
