Founded in 1844, Penfolds is Australia's most iconic wine producer, renowned for its philosophy of blending fruit from multiple premium regions to achieve consistent quality and complexity. While best known for Grange, Penfolds has also pursued excellence in Chardonnay through Yattarna, a project launched with the 1995 vintage after years of research. The name Yattarna, derived from an Aboriginal language, means "little by little, gradually", reflecting the winery's patient pursuit of Australia's finest Chardonnay. Before its release, 144 experimental wines were made, giving rise to the wine's Bin 144 designation. The 2019 vintage blends fruit from Tasmania (57%), Tumbarumba (32%) and the Adelaide Hills (11%), with each region contributing freshness, structure and aromatic complexity. The wine was barrel-fermented and matured for eight months in 55% new French oak barriques, balancing richness with precision. The cool-climate fruit and meticulous selection have made the 2019 one of the strongest Yattarna releases in recent years. The 2019 Yattarna is intensely mineral and tightly wound in its youth. Aromas of grapefruit, Meyer lemon, white peach, Beurre Bosc pear and white nectarine are layered with struck flint, oyster shell, roasted hazelnut, crème brûlée and subtle pastry notes. The palate is powerful yet remarkably refined, combining crystalline acidity with exceptional texture and length. Flinty reduction, saline minerality and discreet oak frame the fruit, creating a Chardonnay that rivals the finest examples from Burgundy while maintaining a distinctly Australian identity. " A profound Chardonnay of extraordinary precision, concentration and longevity, with impeccable balance and mineral drive. " -- Andrew Caillard, MW " Awarded the wine one of his highest scores, recognising its purity, finesse and remarkable structure." -- James Halliday " Aromatic and expansive, with white peach, lime sherbet, dried pineapple, spice and hazelnut carried by a sleek, seamless structure to an exceptionally long finish. " -- Wine Spectator
