Tahbilk’s commitment to Rhône grape varieties is among the most enduring and genuine of any Australian estate, rooted in decades of careful viticulture for Marsanne, Viognier, Roussanne and, more recently, the classic red Rhône blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre. The Purbrick family’s dedication to this southern French tradition reflects a deep philosophical alignment between Tahbilk’s warm continental climate and the varieties that thrive in the regions around the Northern and Southern Rhône, where the combination of heat, diurnal variation and ancient soils creates wines of particular richness and aromatic generosity. The 2020 growing season at Nagambie Lakes continued the estate’s strong run of warm, concentrated vintages, producing Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre of notable ripeness and textural generosity. Grenache, which has found its most convincing expression in the warmer parts of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, performs well in the sandy alluvial soils of the Goulburn River basin, delivering a perfumed, soft-fruited character that forms the wine’s accessible core. Shiraz adds structure and spice, while Mourvèdre contributes a savoury, meaty depth that becomes more pronounced with bottle age and which aligns naturally with Tahbilk’s traditional food-friendly style. Australia’s GSM category has grown significantly in critical and commercial profile since the early 2000s, with producers across McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and now Nagambie Lakes demonstrating the country’s aptitude for producing complex Rhône-inspired blends of considerable quality. Tahbilk’s version is notable for its restraint: the estate’s signature emphasis on natural ripeness without overextraction gives the wine a freshness and drinkability that complements rather than overwhelms food. The Tahbilk GSM is positioned as one of the estate’s most immediately accessible wines, designed for everyday enjoyment rather than the long-term cellaring demanded of the icon wines. A bright ruby with a generous nose of strawberry, red cherry, kirsch, white pepper, dried herbs and a light savoury earth character. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a round and fruit-forward texture and a clean, spice-inflected finish. Drink now through 2027. |
