The GC Côte Vineyard Chardonnay is the most ambitious white wine in the By Farr portfolio, named for Gary Charles Farr himself as a tribute to the sum of his winemaking knowledge and a statement about the single site from which the family considers their finest Chardonnay to originate. The Côte Vineyard, acquired to complete the estate’s land holdings, represents a close-planted, high-density Chardonnay site on exposed hillsides of the Moorabool Valley with varied aspects and multiple soil types. The GC is made from naturally fermented fruit in French oak barrels with malolactic fermentation, bottled without fining. The 2024 vintage produced By Farr Chardonnay of notable refinement and balance, the GC in particular described in retailer notes as “taut, textured, and mineral-driven, showcasing purity and length with remarkable finesse.” The Côte Vineyard’s exposed aspects and the diversity of soils across its hillsides create a natural complexity in the fruit that is difficult to achieve from lower-altitude, more sheltered vineyards in the region. Gary and Nick Farr regard the GC as an ongoing experiment in identifying the precise characteristics that this young but exceptional site is capable of expressing across successive vintages and growing seasons. The GC Côte Vineyard Chardonnay is produced in very small quantities and is among the most sought-after of the By Farr range for collectors and restaurateurs who follow the estate closely. By Farr’s naming of both this wine and the RP Pinot Noir after family members rather than vineyard designations reflects a deliberate statement about the personal investment and human dimension of the winery’s project. The 2024 is the most recently released vintage of this wine and represents the continued evolution of a site that both Gary and Nick Farr have described as their most exciting viticultural discovery to date. Pale gold with an aromatic and mineral nose of white stone fruit, citrus, crushed chalk, hazelnut and a fresh herbal quality. The palate is precise and taut with a mineral-driven texture, vibrant natural acidity and an exceptionally long, saline finish. Best from 2026 through 2034. |
