The 2013 Pommard Les Perrières magnum from Domaine Jean Michel Gaunoux sits between the charming and evolved 2011 offered above and the firmly structured, still-developing 2018 and 2019 offered in Batch 10. The 2013 Burgundy vintage was cool and classic, producing wines of good natural acidity, medium concentration and what has proved to be excellent ageing potential in those estates that managed the difficult season with care. For Gaunoux, whose traditional approach of firm tannins and low-intervention winemaking requires patience from any vintage, the 2013’s naturally cool, structured character means this wine is likely still in the developmental phase of its life cycle in the magnum format, offering more in the way of structural promise than the accessible charm of the 2011 but less of the primary fruit generosity of the warmer 2018 and 2019.

The Les Perrières site in Pommard, with its stony, limestone-dominant soils, consistently produces wines of greater mineral tension and structural precision than the more generous neighbouring Premier Crus of Rugiens and Epenots, and in a cool, slow-developing vintage like 2013, this character is particularly pronounced. The magnum provides ideal conditions for the wine’s further development over the next five to ten years, during which the tannins should continue their patient evolution towards the kind of complexity and integration that Gaunoux wines achieve in their maturity.

The four Gaunoux Pommard Les Perrières magnums appearing across Batches 10 and 13 (2006, 2011, 2013, 2018, 2019) provide a genuinely unique vertical study of this Premier Cru site and producer across contrasting vintages and stages of development, spanning from full maturity through intermediate development to wines still in the early stages of their evolution. For the collector building a Gaunoux vertical, the 2013 fills a crucial middle ground that distinguishes itself clearly from both its warmer and its cooler stable companions.

Ruby with a precise and mineral nose of red cherry, iron ore, dried violet, leather, spice and the characteristic stony terroir of Les Perrières on Pommard limestone. Medium to full-bodied with structured tannins still developing in magnum, good natural acidity and a long, mineral finish that promises further evolution. Best from 2026 through 2040.
