Domaine Ramonet is among the most storied estates in all of Burgundy, founded in Chassagne-Montrachet in 1919 by Pierre Ramonet and now in its third and fourth generations of family stewardship. While the domaine’s critical reputation rests primarily on its white Burgundies, including the legendary Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet, the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet represents one of Ramonet’s most compelling Grand Cru expressions: a wine from a 0.45-hectare parcel within this exquisite 3.7-hectare Grand Cru, situated at the northern edge of Bâtard-Montrachet on the Puligny-Chassagne communal boundary. Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is one of the smallest and most sought-after Grand Crus in Burgundy, with production divided among only a handful of domaines. At Ramonet, the parcel consists of old vines farmed to extremely low yields and vinified with the same hands-off approach that governs every wine in the portfolio: native yeast fermentation, ageing in a proportion of new French oak barrels and bottling without filtration. The 2017 Burgundy white vintage was defined by severe spring frost that dramatically reduced yields across the Côte de Beaune, and the resulting wines from the finest estates achieved a concentration and complexity that partly compensated for their scarcity. Ramonet’s Grand Cru whites, including the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, occupy a unique position in the Burgundy market: they are genuinely among the finest Chardonnay wines produced anywhere in the world, yet their scarcity and the domaine’s preference for private sales and limited restaurant allocation means that approved critic coverage is inconsistent. The five approved publications occasionally review Ramonet’s Grand Crus, particularly on retrospective tasting occasions, but verified scores for the 2017 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet were not confirmed at the time of this research. Collectors who understand Ramonet’s reputation need no score to appreciate the provenance of this wine. Pale gold with a restrained but intensely complex nose of white peach, hazelnut, lemon curd, crushed chalk and the distinctive floral mineral freshness of great Puligny-Montrachet limestone. Full-bodied on the palate with exceptional concentration, taut acidity, a silky texture and an extraordinarily long, mineral finish. Best from 2026 through 2040. Aromas of pastry cream, fresh pears, Meyer lemon and white flowers. A full-bodied, deep and textural wine that's concentrated but incisive, with good structural tension and a long, chalky finish.
