Château de la Maltroye is a family domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet with an impressive portfolio of holdings across that village’s finest Premier Cru white and red wine sites, as well as a stake in the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru that spans the boundary between Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. The estate has been associated with quality Chassagne-Montrachet production for several generations and produces its wines with a traditional approach that emphasises natural fermentation, extended lees ageing and a restrained use of new oak, allowing the individual terroir of each vineyard to express itself with clarity. The Bâtard-Montrachet holding represents the domaine’s finest white wine source, and the annual production from this parcel is one of the more compelling expressions of this Grand Cru from the Chassagne side of the appellation. Bâtard-Montrachet is a 11.86-hectare Grand Cru straddling the communal boundary between Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, producing Chardonnay of exceptional weight, mineral depth and ageing ambition from its clay-rich limestone soils at the foot of the Montrachet slope. The Grand Cru sits immediately below and south of the legendary Le Montrachet itself, and produces wines of a slightly fuller, more textured and less austere character than the Le Montrachet or Chevalier-Montrachet above it, combining great richness and texture with the mineral precision that only the finest Côte de Beaune Grand Cru limestone can provide. The 2022 Burgundy white wine vintage was very warm, and the Bâtard-Montrachet, with its naturally richer, fuller style, was extremely well served by a vintage that provided both concentration and the structural depth to balance it. A Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet from a quality-focused family domaine with established holdings in this vineyard represents one of the most compelling opportunities in fine white Burgundy for collectors who seek wines of genuine Grand Cru authority at prices substantially below those of Leflaive, Ramonet or Colin. Château de la Maltroye has been producing creditable Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet from its holdings for decades, and the 2022 vintage’s combination of warmth and concentration provides the conditions in which this site and this producer should achieve some of the finest results in the estate’s recent history. |
