Tasting Note :

Domaine Henri Jouan is a small family estate in Morey-Saint-Denis with holdings in several of the village’s finest Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, producing Pinot Noir in a traditional, restrained style that prioritises elegance and site expression. Clos Saint-Denis is one of the five Grand Cru vineyards within the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation and the vineyard that gave the village its own name, a distinction that reflects the historical importance and quality potential of this site on the mid-slope of the hill above the village. Despite this historic prestige, Clos Saint-Denis has historically received less critical attention than the more fashionable Morey-Saint-Denis Grand Crus of Clos de la Roche and Clos de Tart, creating an interesting value proposition for collectors who follow the appellation with careful attention.

Clos Saint-Denis is a 6.62-hectare Grand Cru whose clay-limestone soils produce Pinot Noir of a distinctive character: lighter, more perfumed and more immediately accessible in its youth than the more muscular Clos de la Roche, with a delicacy and aromatic finesse that places it closer to the Chambolle-Musigny style than to the structured power of the more famous Morey Grand Crus. Henri Jouan’s holdings within Clos Saint-Denis are small and carefully farmed, producing wines that reflect this lighter, more elegant register. The 2022 Burgundy vintage was warm and generous, producing wines of attractive early fruit appeal and supple tannin structure that provides the ideal context for a wine of this delicate character to express its full aromatic complexity without the austerity of cooler vintages.

Clos Saint-Denis from a small independent family domaine is one of Burgundy’s most genuine collector discoveries: a Grand Cru with outstanding historical prestige, a distinctive and arguably undervalued terroir, and a small-producer identity that keeps quantities at a level where demand consistently outpaces supply among those who know the wine. For collectors who seek serious Grand Cru Burgundy from the most precisely individual address within the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation at prices below those of Chambolle-Musigny or Vosne-Romanée Grand Crus, this is a wine of outstanding relevance.

Ruby with a delicate and perfumed nose of red cherry, violet, rose petal, light spice and a fine mineral thread from the Clos Saint-Denis limestone soils. Light to medium-bodied with silky, polished tannins, excellent natural acidity and an elegant, long, mineral finish with the floral complexity that distinguishes Clos Saint-Denis from its more muscular Morey neighbours. Best from 2027 through 2040.
