Domaine Ramonet’s Bourgogne Rouge is the estate’s most accessible and entry-level red wine expression, produced from Pinot Noir grown in Burgundy-appellation-level vineyard parcels and vinified with the same natural fermentation, careful handling and restrained new oak philosophy that governs the estate’s entire approach across all quality levels. While the Ramonet domaine’s reputation rests almost entirely on its extraordinary Premier Cru and Grand Cru white wines from Chassagne-Montrachet and the adjacent Grand Crus, the estate also maintains a small portfolio of red wine production from its holdings in Burgundy and Chassagne-Montrachet village, and the Bourgogne Rouge provides access to the domaine’s winemaking identity at an entry level that places it within the reach of those who follow the estate’s work but whose primary interest lies in exploring what the Ramonet name and philosophy mean at the most introductory level. The 2022 Burgundy red wine vintage was warm and produced wines of good colour, generous fruit and accessible early drinking character, with the characteristic supple tannin structure of a warm-vintage Pinot Noir that opens pleasurably earlier than the leaner, more austere cool vintages. A Bourgogne Rouge from Ramonet in a warm vintage will reflect the vintage’s accessibility and the estate’s philosophically clean, natural approach to Pinot Noir production: a wine of simple pleasure rather than complexity, reflecting the Ramonet house style at a level appropriate to its appellation status. The opportunity to drink a Ramonet Bourgogne Rouge is primarily of interest as an educational exercise in the estate’s house style and as an accessible entry into the portfolio for those who cannot justify the price of the Grand Cru expressions. It should be appreciated for what it is rather than for comparison with the Grand Crus: an honest, simply produced village-level Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most celebrated estates. |
