Tasting notes | : | Planted in 1999, this syrah grows along a low rise of Goldridge soil at Eric Sussman’s estate in Occidental. When he purchased the property in 2012, he began converting it to a biodynamic farm, sustaining an ecology that seems to strengthen this wine’s character, opening more onto the wilderness with each successive vintage. This 2018 feels outside of human control; it tastes as if the fresh fruit and the beasts that consume it have formed a pact, working together to weave scents of roses in bloom and mushrooms with their penchant for decay. It’s not a rotten or a funky character; more like the fresh earthy energy you might find if you turn over a log in the forest to discover a microcosm teeming with life. In this case, the life is roses, orange blossoms, cherries and shiitakes. Wine & Spirits |
