Françoise Bedel is one of the most philosophically committed estates in the Champagne appellation, based in Crouttes-sur-Marne in the Vallée de la Marne and pioneering biodynamic viticulture in the region from the early 1990s, well before the practice attracted its current level of attention among growers and collectors. The domaine farms 8.5 hectares of Pinot Meunier-dominant vineyards on the limestone and clay soils of the Marne valley with an approach that extends from the vineyard into the cellar: all wines are vinified with native yeasts, no fining or filtration, and disgorgement is timed according to the lunar calendar. The estate is certified biodynamic by Demeter and is considered one of the founding reference points of serious artisan Champagne production in the valley. Entre Ciel et Terre is Bedel’s most celebrated and widely distributed cuvée, a non-vintage Brut blended predominantly from Pinot Meunier with smaller proportions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, incorporating a significant reserve wine component that provides textural depth and ageing complexity alongside the primary orchard fruit character of Meunier. The name, translating as ‘between sky and earth,’ reflects the estate’s biodynamic philosophy and its commitment to working in harmony with natural cycles rather than against them. The Brut dosage and the generous Meunier character give the wine immediate appeal, while the biodynamic farming and reserve wine depth provide the structural interest that rewards exploration over multiple bottles and vintages. Françoise Bedel is one of the most frequently cited names in the specialist grower Champagne literature and among the importers and retailers who serve collectors seeking wines of certified organic and biodynamic production. The estate’s reputation is built on consistency of philosophy over three decades rather than on the kind of individual vineyard or disgorgement-specific complexity that characterises the most niche artisan producers, making Entre Ciel et Terre an ideal introduction to serious biodynamic Champagne for collectors who are new to the estate and a reliable benchmark for those who know it well. Pale gold with fine, steady bubbles and an aromatic nose of ripe pear, white peach, brioche, ginger biscuit and a warm, rounded mineral depth from the Marne valley limestone. Medium-bodied with good natural acidity, a creamy textured mousse and a generous, gently spiced finish that reflects the dominance of old-vine Meunier in the blend. Drink now through 2028. |
