Robert Ampeau et Fils is one of Burgundy's most distinctive traditional domaines. Based in Meursault, the family became renowned for releasing wines only after prolonged ageing in their own cellars, often holding bottles for 10–20 years before sale. This patient approach means even mature vintages are frequently offered with exceptional provenance. Their style emphasises longevity over early accessibility, producing white Burgundies that evolve slowly while retaining freshness. Les Combettes is one of the finest Premier Cru vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet, bordering Meursault and lying just below the Grand Crus. The limestone-rich soils and ideal exposure produce Chardonnay that combines Puligny's hallmark precision and minerality with the richness associated with neighbouring Meursault. Wines from Les Combettes are celebrated for their elegance, depth and remarkable ageing potential. The 1994 Burgundy vintage produced structured white wines with bright acidity. While not regarded as one of the legendary vintages upon release, well-stored examples from meticulous producers such as Robert Ampeau have developed beautifully over three decades, gaining complexity while preserving freshness thanks to the domaine's traditional winemaking and careful cellaring. Now fully mature, the wine typically displays aromas of baked apple, yellow peach, preserved lemon, acacia honey, hazelnut, toasted brioche and wet stone. With further aeration, notes of truffle, beeswax, mushroom and almond emerge. The palate is rich and silky yet remains vibrant, with fine mineral tension carrying the wine to a long, savoury finish. Mature bottles should show remarkable harmony between fruit, tertiary complexity and Puligny's characteristic chalky precision.
