Domaine Bonneau du Martray is one of Burgundy's most iconic white wine estates and the only domaine devoted almost exclusively to the Grand Cru vineyards of Corton and Corton-Charlemagne. With nearly 11 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne, it is the appellation's largest single owner. The estate is celebrated for producing Chardonnay of exceptional purity, minerality and longevity, with an emphasis on organic and biodynamic viticulture and restrained oak ageing. Corton-Charlemagne is one of Burgundy's greatest Grand Cru white wine vineyards. Situated on the Hill of Corton, the west-facing slopes are planted on limestone, marl and clay soils that provide outstanding drainage while preserving freshness. Bonneau du Martray's holdings span several parcels across the hillside, allowing the final blend to capture the site's full complexity, combining floral elegance, mineral precision and impressive structure. The 2004 vintage produced a classic, cool-climate expression of Corton-Charlemagne. Now fully mature, it offers aromas of lemon zest, green apple, white peach, white flowers and crushed stone, evolving into toasted hazelnut, beeswax, honey and subtle spice with extended aeration. The palate is powerful yet remarkably precise, driven by vibrant acidity and a pronounced chalky minerality. Despite over two decades of age, well-stored bottles continue to display freshness, tension and a long, saline finish. " Described a reserved but elegant bouquet of white flowers, green apple, pear, spice and wet stone. He praised its exceptional purity, intensity and mineral-driven finish, noting that it was built for long ageing. " -- Burghound, Allen Meadows |
