Domaine Xavier Monnot is one of Meursault's most respected family estates. Formerly known as Domaine René Monnier, the estate was renamed after Xavier Monnot took over in 2005 and modernised both the vineyards and cellar. Today the domaine farms approximately 17 hectares (42 acres) across some of Burgundy's finest villages, including Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Beaune, Volnay and Maranges. The vineyards are managed using lutte raisonnée (sustainable, reasoned viticulture), with an emphasis on mature vines and low yields to maximise concentration and site expression. Le Limozin is one of Meursault's most highly regarded village-level lieux-dits, situated immediately below the Premier Cru Les Genevrières. Although not officially classified as Premier Cru, it is widely regarded as producing wines of near Premier Cru quality. Xavier Monnot's parcels are planted with old vines dating from 1961 and 1976 on clay-limestone soils, contributing both richness and mineral precision. The wine is matured for 12–14 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 15–20% new oak to preserve fruit purity while adding subtle complexity. This is a classic Meursault with generous texture balanced by freshness. Expect aromas of ripe orchard fruit, lemon custard, hazelnut and white flowers, complemented by gentle notes of toast, vanilla and butter from restrained oak ageing. The palate is concentrated yet energetic, finishing with pronounced limestone minerality and saline persistence. Compared with many richer Meursaults, Monnot's style is notably precise and elegant. " Fresh aromas of just-peeled fruit with touches of marigold and wildflowers. The palate offers crisp orchard fruit, subtle vanilla, bright salinity and chalky limestone minerality, finishing with excellent precision. " -- Wine Enthusiast " Aromas and flavours of vanilla, clove and nutmeg frame peach, bitter citrus and butterscotch. Tangy acidity keeps the wine balanced with a long, fresh finish. " -- Wine Spectator " A spicy bouquet with stem ginger and yellow fruit leads to an open, well-balanced palate with integrated oak, lively acidity and an elegant, harmonious finish. " -- Vinous " Fuller-bodied with a lightly toasted character, vibrant acidity and good ageing potential. " -- Jasper Morris |
