Castelgiocondo is the Frescobaldi family’s estate in Montalcino, a property whose 3,000 hectares of land, of which 170 are planted to vine, make it one of the most significant agricultural holdings in the entire Tuscan Maremma. The estate is situated in the south-western sector of the Montalcino DOCG, where galestro and alberese soils at elevations between 300 and 450 metres produce Sangiovese Grosso of pronounced mineral character and structural depth. The ‘Artisti per Frescobaldi’ label is a limited-edition artistic presentation of Castelgiocondo’s standard Brunello di Montalcino, produced only in selected vintages and dressed with artwork commissioned from leading Italian artists, making each release simultaneously a collectible wine object and a serious Brunello expression. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino vintage was defined by exceptional warmth and drought throughout the growing season, producing wines of remarkable concentration, precocious approachability and generous fruit character, though with somewhat lower acidity than the finest Brunello vintages. Critics diverged on the vintage’s ultimate potential: those who favour the more classic, austere Brunello style were less enthusiastic, while those who value immediate pleasure and perfumed richness placed 2011 among the decade’s best. Decanter awarded the 2011 Castelgiocondo Brunello 95 points, the highest score among approved publications, describing a wine of notable ripeness and complexity. Critical consensus across five approved publications confirms the 2011 Castelgiocondo Artisti per Frescobaldi as a wine of strong quality: Decanter awarded 95 points, James Suckling 93, Wine Enthusiast 92, Wine Advocate 91 and Wine Spectator 91. The magnum format ensures a slower, more even development than the standard bottle, adding particular interest for collectors who plan to age the wine further. The ‘Artisti per Frescobaldi’ designation also provides this magnum with an additional layer of scarcity and cultural significance, as each artist-label edition is limited in production and increasingly sought by collectors who prize the intersection of fine wine and Italian contemporary art. Deep ruby with purple highlights and an opulent nose of ripe cherry, plum, fig, dried rose, liquorice and cedar, reflecting the warmth and generosity of the 2011 vintage. Full-bodied on the palate with rounded tannins, good natural acidity and a long, spiced finish of characteristic Brunello complexity. Drinking well now; continue to develop through 2033. A wine of real concentration and charm. The 2011 vintage produced a rich and approachable style at Castelgiocondo, with the estate’s characteristic mineral depth from the south-western Montalcino galestro terroir providing structure beneath the opulent fruit. — Decanter |
