Cantina Terlano (Kellerei Terlan) is the benchmark cooperative winery of the Alto Adige region, founded in 1893 and now farming approximately 190 hectares across 143 member growers in the Terlano commune northwest of Bolzano. The cooperative is frequently cited as Italy’s finest cooperative winery and as one of the world’s best arguments for the cooperative model as a vehicle for quality wine production. Its exceptional reputation rests on a portfolio that spans the full range from entry-level Tradition wines to some of the most expensive and critically celebrated Italian whites ever produced, including the 2021 Terlaner I Grande Cuvée which received perfect 100-point scores from both James Suckling and Falstaff. The Pinot Bianco Tradition is the entry-level wine in Cantina Terlano’s four-tier quality hierarchy (Tradition, Selection, Rarity, Primo), and it is produced from Pinot Bianco vines farmed by the cooperative’s members on the volcanic porphyry and mineral-rich soils of the Terlano commune at elevations between 250 and 900 metres above sea level. The wine is aged in stainless steel rather than wood, preserving the grape’s characteristic freshness, floral aromatics and mineral precision. 190,000 bottles are produced annually, making it one of the cooperative’s largest productions, yet the quality consistency it maintains across this volume is remarkable by any international standard. Wine Enthusiast awarded the 2021 Cantina Terlano Pinot Bianco Tradition 93 points, describing a wine with ‘fresh aromas of green apples and tart cider pears along with fresh white flowers’ that ‘highlights the mountain rocks and a touch of alpine herbs on the palate.’ The Wine Advocate, covering the same vintage, described a wine ‘redolent of lemon mousse and peach,’ with ‘plenty of salty mineral’ and a ‘semi-rich polished and creamy finish.’ The consistency of critical praise across both publications underlines the remarkable quality-to-production ratio that Cantina Terlano achieves at this level of its range. Pale straw with aromas of crisp green apple, pear blossom, lemon zest, alpine herbs and a salty mineral freshness from the volcanic porphyry soils. The palate is light to medium-bodied with excellent natural acidity, a creamy texture and a clean, lingering mineral finish. An outstanding everyday white of real precision and character. Drink now through 2027.Fresh aromas of green apples and tart cider pears along with fresh white flowers. The wine highlights the mountain rocks and a touch of alpine herbs on the palate, followed by a mixture of various apples and lemon on the finish. A clean and exceptional expression of Pinot Bianco from this mountainous environment. — Wine Enthusiast |
