Tasting Notes
|
Founded in 1987, Domaine Henri Magnien is a small family estate, with 6 hectares, located in Gevrey-Chambertin. After working side by side with his father Francois, Charles took over the domaine in 2012 and has taken the wines to new heights. He is considered to be one of the rising stars in Burgundy. They have been using an old clone which is called Pinot Noir Magnien, aged between 70 to 100 years old, bringing unusual power and spiciness to the wines. The domaine has many of the very best vineyards, including Lavaux St-Jacques, Les Cazetiers and Ruchottes-Chambertin. In the past five years, they have converted 70-80% of their vineyards to organic viticulture. "A full purple, heady at 13.8%, with a little new wood and an aspect of the nose where the oak is rather dominating, but no problem in the mouth with a weight of generous dark fruit covering the tannins behind. Good length as well. The nose should settle down and the finer qualities of this Corton assert themselves." -- Jasper Morris " The 2022 Corton Les Grandes Lolières Grand Cru comes from a climat that is planted with white and red, though it is forbidden to write the name of the lieu-dit if it is Chardonnay. This offers attractive red cherry, wild strawberry and potpourri scents on the nose where you might incorrectly assume there are stems. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, a pinch of black pepper, and allspice. " -- Vinous |
