The Collection Imperiale Creation No. 1 is Moet et Chandon's inaugural prestige cuvee, launched in 2023 to celebrate the house's 280th anniversary. Crafted by cellar master Benoit Gouez and described as the pinnacle of the house's practice of Haute Oenologie, the wine is an assemblage of seven remarkable vintages: 2013 and 2012 from stainless steel, the powerful 2010 and tense 2008 aged in barrel and on lees respectively, the full-bodied 2006 in oak, the lively 2000 in oak, and the elegant 2004 in tank. The blend is 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. The Wine Advocate awarded 92 points, describing a 'delicate, fresh, complex bouquet with aromas of honey, orchard fruits, menthol, toasted nuts, butter, spices and tonka beans, medium-bodied with an iodine-like, chalky core of fruit and a delicate, tense mid-palate.' Decanter awarded a remarkable 96 points, describing 'dazzling aromatic complexity framed by a controlled and alluring reductive tautness of gunpowder, white pepper and charred citrus peel, with a lengthy procession of poached stone fruit.' Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast each awarded 95 points; James Suckling 95. Creation No. 1 represents a significant departure for Moet et Chandon: the house's first Brut Nature Champagne (zero dosage), a decision that reflects Cellar Master Gouez's ambition to allow the accumulated complexity of seven decades of reserve wine to speak without the softening effect of residual sugar. Released at a price point comparable to prestige cuvees from the major houses, the wine signals Moet's renewed ambition at the very top of the Champagne quality hierarchy. Further releases are planned on a two-year cycle through the house's 300th anniversary in 2043. An ideal aperitif or pairing for oysters, lobster, fine turbot or aged Parmesan. The Brut Nature format demands a broad glass to allow the complex aromatics to develop. Cellar for up to five years for further development. Pale gold with fine, precise bubbles. The nose is complex and layered: gunpowder, white pepper, toasted nuts, orchard fruit, honey, menthol and charred citrus peel reveal themselves in succession. The palate is medium-bodied with an iodine-like chalky mineral core, tense mid-palate and a saline, precise finish. Zero dosage gives electric clarity and length. |
