Champagne Roger Pouillon et Fils was founded in 1947 by Roger Pouillon in the Premier Cru village of Mareuil-sur-Ay in the Vallee de la Marne. Now in its third generation under Fabrice Pouillon, the estate covers 7.7 hectares across 42 parcels in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages including Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay, Mutigny and Epernay. Fabrice combines traditional Champagne discipline with organic and biodynamic viticulture, horse-drawn ploughing and massal selections, approaching the cellar with a commitment to expressing each parcel's individual character. The Solera Brut Premier Cru is the estate's most intellectually distinctive cuvee: a perpetual reserve blend established in 1997, drawing wine from a solera of sixteen or more consecutive vintages through a continuous annual draw-and-replace cycle. Approximately 30% of the solera is removed each year for secondary fermentation and replaced with 30% wine from the new harvest, creating a wine of accumulated complexity and layered age without any single vintage dominating the profile. The blend is an equal partnership of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Premier Cru parcels. Wine Spectator awarded 92 points to the Pouillon Solera, reflecting the consistent quality of this unique multi-vintage format. The solera method, more commonly associated with Sherry in Jerez, has been applied at Mareuil-sur-Ay to create a Champagne of notable maturity and depth, expressing the house style of the terroir rather than any single harvest's character. Specialist buyers have appreciated the format's depth and philosophical distinctiveness within a Champagne market generally focused on vintage and vintage-dominant blends. Best as an aperitif or with oysters, creamy risotto or delicate seafood preparations. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees Celsius. The solera's accumulated reserve complexity means the wine rewards decanting in a small carafe to express its full aromatic range. Golden-amber with a fine, creamy mousse. The nose shows the accumulated complexity of the solera method: toasted brioche, orange zest, orchard fruit, honey, wax and a distinctive mineral precision from the Mareuil-sur-Ay Premier Cru terroir. The palate is full and rich, balanced by fresh acidity, with a long, complex and satisfying finish. |
