Jean-Louis Vergnon is a family estate based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the Cote des Blancs' most distinguished Grand Cru villages. Now in its fifth generation under Clement and Charlotte Vergnon, the estate farms 5.3 hectares exclusively of Chardonnay from Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites, practising organic cultivation. The estate avoids malolactic fermentation across its entire range, preserving acidity and mineral tension as defining characteristics. The Eloquence is the estate's extra-brut cuvee, bottled at 3 grams per litre dosage from a base of 80% 2019 vintage and 20% reserve wines. The blend draws 90% from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru and 10% from Avize and Oger Grand Cru; 30-year-old vines are fermented in a combination of stainless steel and older barrels, then aged 36 months on the lees. The magnum format extends lees contact and slows the wine's development, producing a fuller expression of the same base wine. Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs commands a premium among educated Champagne buyers for the exceptional chalk-driven minerality, tension and longevity the village's soils consistently deliver. The Eloquence's extra-brut dosage highlights these qualities directly, making it one of the estate's most site-expressive cuvees. James Suckling awarded 93 points to the current release. The magnum is ideal for formal dining and for buyers who wish to cellar a single format over several years. Outstanding with Breton lobster, grilled sole, white truffle or aged Parmesan. Best served between 9 and 11 degrees Celsius; the magnum rewards opening an hour before service, allowing the wine to breathe and integrate. Bright straw gold with a fine, creamy mousse. A mineral, chalk-driven nose shows lemon peel, coconut, brioche and white blossom with an almost austere precision. The palate is medium-bodied with zesty acidity, delicate citrus and a stony, saline finish. Polished and tense, with good complexity for development. |
