Tasting Note :

Castello Pomino is the Frescobaldi family's property within the tiny Pomino DOC in the Arno valley east of Florence, where the estate has farmed since the seventeenth century. The Vinsanto is the most labour-intensive and historically significant wine in the Pomino range, produced from air-dried Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia Bianca Toscana and San Colombano grapes that are pressed after months of concentration on drying racks, then fermented slowly and aged in small wooden caratelli barrels. The 2019 vintage complements the 2018 released previously.

Pomino DOC Vinsanto is distinguished from other Tuscan Vinsanti by the historically permitted presence of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco in the appellation's regulations, though the Frescobaldi production draws primarily on the indigenous Trebbiano and Malvasia varieties. The 2019 growing season at Pomino's elevated 600 to 800 metre vineyards was characterised by the alternating rain and sun that the estate identifies as contributing to superior aromatic complexity in the drying fruit. The half bottle format is the standard presentation for this wine.

Frescobaldi's Pomino Vinsanto represents one of the few documented historical wine styles that survives in largely unchanged form at this estate, where the family's centuries of association with the property has maintained the traditional production methods. The wine's slow evolution in caratello barrels through seven or more years of production means it arrives ready for immediate enjoyment alongside desserts and cheese, while its residual sugar and acidity ensure decades of further development in the bottle.

Drink now through 2035. Pair with cantucci, amaretti, almond pastries, aged Gorgonzola or dry fruit and nut preparations. Serve at 12 degrees Celsius in a small-bowled glass.

Deep amber with golden hues. The bouquet shows dried apricot, candied orange peel, walnut, nutmeg, star anise and a long caramel-coffee note from the caratello ageing. The palate is rich and concentrated with the characteristic Vinsanto balance of sweetness and a refreshing tangy acidity; the finish is very long and warming. Ready to drink.
