Domaine Hudelot-Baillet is a singularly focused Burgundy estate: all holdings sit within Chambolle-Musigny and the cellars are in the village itself. Founded in 1981 by Joel Hudelot and Chantal Baillet, the domaine has been directed since 2004 by Dominique Leguen, Joel's son-in-law, who has quietly elevated quality across the range. Neal Martin of Vinous is credited with bringing the estate to wider international attention after encountering the wines in a London specialist wine shop before they were widely known. The Vieilles Vignes cuvee is sourced from three plots totalling less than one hectare within Chambolle-Musigny: Les Babilleres, Derriere le Four and Les Nazoires, with vine age between sixty and eighty years. The chalk-rich soils of Chambolle lend the wine its characteristic aromatic delicacy and silky texture. Farming follows lutte raisonnee principles, and the harvest is sorted by hand in the vineyard and again at the cuverie. After destemming and an eight-day maceration, the wine is aged in approximately one-third new oak for twelve to eighteen months before being bottled without fining or filtration. Old-vine Chambolle-Musigny at village level occupies a compelling space in the Burgundy collector market: the appellation's reputation for the most perfumed and silky expression of Cote de Nuits Pinot Noir, combined with vines of this age, routinely produces wines that rival premier cru quality at a lower classification price. Hudelot-Baillet's Vieilles Vignes has attracted sustained critical attention as an overperforming benchmark for village-level Chambolle, and demand consistently outpaces the small production. A natural partner for roasted duck breast, pigeon, or mushroom-based dishes that allow the wine's aromatic delicacy to emerge. The 2020 concentration means the wine will benefit from five to six years of cellaring; decant for forty-five minutes if opening now. Clear ruby with violet highlights. Aromas of dark cherry, cassis and violet are complemented by a hint of melted chocolate and gentle spice from the oak integration. The palate is well structured and sappy, with expressive black cherry fruit and a firmly built, clean finish. The 2020's characteristic concentration and density call for a few years of patience. |
