Château La Gaffelière is a Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) of Saint-Émilion, situated on the limestone plateau and côte immediately adjacent to Château Ausone and Château Canon, producing wines from old-vine Merlot and Cabernet Franc on the appellation’s finest limestone and clay-limestone soils that have placed the estate at a consistently high quality level over the past two decades. The estate is managed with biodynamic methods and has invested significantly in vineyard and cellar precision over recent years, producing wines that have attracted increasing critical attention from all approved publications as the Comte de Malet-Roquefort’s commitment to quality has produced measurably consistent improvements across successive vintages. Château La Gaffelière was highlighted by Antonio Galloni at Vinous as one of the outstanding Saint-Émilion estates of the 2020 vintage, confirming its current trajectory as one of the appellation’s rising stars. The 2022 Saint-Émilion vintage was warm and produced wines of excellent concentration and aromatic richness from the finest limestone plateau and côte sites, whose natural drainage and temperature-moderated aspect provided the ideal conditions for the 2022’s warmth to express itself as concentration and aromatic depth rather than over-ripeness or alcoholic excess. La Gaffelière’s position on the côte, adjacent to Ausone’s famed limestone soils, provides a natural moderating influence through the limestone’s drainage and the morning shade from the surrounding woodland that protects the vineyard from the most extreme afternoon heat even in warm vintages. Château La Gaffelière 2022 provides collectors with access to a Premier Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion estate of documented quality and positive critical trajectory in a vintage of genuine warmth and concentration, at prices that reflect the estate’s Premier B classification rather than the increasingly exaggerated commercial profile of the more marketed Saint-Émilion names. |
