Roagna is one of Piedmont's most revered traditional producers, with a history dating back to the late 19th century. Today, the estate is managed by Luca Roagna and is celebrated for meticulous organic viticulture, very old vines, extended macerations and long ageing. While Roagna is best known for its Barbaresco and Barolo, it also produces a handful of highly distinctive white wines in tiny quantities. Solea is one of the most unconventional wines in Roagna's portfolio. It is a blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo, with the Nebbiolo pressed immediately and vinified as a white wine, contributing texture and structure without colour. The result is a unique Langhe Bianco that combines Chardonnay's generosity with Nebbiolo's aromatic lift and firm backbone. Production is extremely limited, making Solea a sought-after curiosity among collectors. The 2020 Solea is bright golden in colour with an expressive bouquet of white flowers, acacia, ripe pear, citrus peel, honey, chamomile and delicate spice. The palate is medium to full-bodied, textured and energetic, balancing ripe orchard fruit with vibrant acidity and a pronounced mineral streak. Nebbiolo lends a subtle grip and length to the finish, giving the wine an individuality rarely found in Italian white blends. " Sweet floral notes give the bouquet lovely breadth. Soft and caressing... an intriguing Piedmontese dry white with lovely orchard fruit character, fine balance and a distinct kick of Nebbiolo structure that frames the finish." Recommended for drinking between 2022 and 2026." -- Vinous |
