Tasting Note :

Château l’Église-Clinet is one of the most celebrated and consistently admired small estates in Pomerol, owned by Denis Durantou until his death in 2023 and now managed by his daughters, producing from a mere 5.5 hectares of Merlot-dominant vineyard on the clay and gravel soils of the Pomerol plateau a wine whose combination of precision, depth and aromatic intensity has placed it among the finest expressions of the appellation’s potential in every great vintage of the modern era. The estate occupies a well-positioned parcel between Pétrus and l’Évangile on the plateau’s finest clay-dominant soils, producing Merlot of extraordinary richness and mineral depth that matures over decades into wines of extraordinary complexity. The 2000 vintage is considered one of the most celebrated and age-worthy l’Église-Clinet vintages in the estate’s history, widely described by those who have followed its development as a wine of great beauty and structure that continues to improve after a quarter century in the cellar.

The 2000 Bordeaux vintage, one of the great modern classics, was particularly successful in Pomerol, where the combination of warm growing conditions and the excellent clay-dominant soils of the plateau produced Merlot of extraordinary concentration and aromatic richness. At l’Église-Clinet, whose relatively high proportion of old Cabernet Franc adds aromatic complexity and structural support to the Merlot-dominant blend, the 2000 vintage produced a wine that has consistently been described by collectors and critics who have opened it over the past decade as among the finest ever made at this estate. At twenty-five years from harvest, the wine is at or approaching its absolute peak, with all the elements of primary fruit, secondary complexity and tertiary development in perfect balance.

The 2000 l’Église-Clinet is among the most important and collectible Pomerol wines available from the celebrated 2000 Bordeaux vintage, and its appearance on the secondary market at this stage of its development provides a rare opportunity to acquire a wine that is simultaneously at its peak quality and at a stage of secondary market pricing that fully reflects its significance.

Deep garnet with a gloriously complex nose of ripe black cherry, plum, tobacco, cedar, dried violet, iron mineral, truffle and the distinctive clay-mineral depth of the Pomerol plateau at full maturity. Full-bodied with seamlessly integrated, velvety tannins, excellent residual acidity and a very long, savoury, mineral finish of extraordinary complexity. Best now through 2035.
